Welcome to Marrakech
Welcome to Marrakech, one of the most visited cities in all of Africa. A city of dreams with palm tress forests and red earth walls. A city alive with the intoxicating smell of orange trees and spices. Take a carriage ride through the bustling streets, sit and enjoy tea with the local carpet sellers in their boutiques, tour ancient prison cells or the tiled rooms of the King's chambers. On Sunday, join the locals for a picnic at the Menara pool and olive groves. Take a stroll through beautiful gardens or the famous souk with its thousands of sights, then at the end of the day have a bowl of Hrira (traditional Moroccan soup) and dates in Djemaa El Fna, the most exuberant square in Africa, and the true heart of Morocco.
Marrakech is broken up into different "cities." The most famous is that of the Medina, the old city. Enclosed by high red walls, the Medina holds many of the wonders of Marrakech, from the never-ending souq to the infamous Djemaa El Fna. It is also here that you will find many of the attractions and museams that Marrakech offers. Outside of the walls of the Medina is Gueliz, the commercial center of Marrakech. With a heavy European influence, Gueliz is home to chain shopping centers and high-end restaurants, not to mention a beautiful display of fountains. There are artistic boutiques, night clubs, and pool halls. The Palmerie is further outside of Marrakech, and almost feels like it is out in the country instead of in the city. Palm tree forests give haven to Berbers in tradition garb with camels ready to give rides to tourists. There are golf courses and fancy riads, perfect for those who prefer quiet and slow-paced. The other cities of Marrakech are mostly residential aren't as well known to travelers.
