Moroccan People

Learn helpful travel tips from travelers and locals alike.

The Moroccan people are a mix of Berber, Arabic, African, and European blood. Perhaps it is this fusion that makes Moroccans so diverse.

Moroccan's are largely a rural population, and many of those now living in the cities were originally farmers and country folk. They have kept their original languages and customs while at the same time adapting to city life.

The Moroccan Woman:
Posted Sep 09th, 2009 by Driss
In the countryside, the Moroccan woman often works harder than the man. You can see her out in the fields all day in the hot sun, her hair up in a scarf. This is the scarf of a working woman, and dates back in Berber history before the beginning of Islam.

Most Moroccan women are artisans, weavers, herders, midwives to animals and humans alike, and always, a housewife. Their life consists of balancing their work with the daily tasks of caring for their children and husband. The women who have moved to the cities keep their country ways, but those who were born in the cities can choose a very different life. In the cities, women are educated along with the men, and later go on to work alongside them. They can choose to wear the traditional djelaba or Western clothes, such as pant suits or jeans. There are other Moroccan women who are pious Muslims, dressed in the Middle Eastern hijab. They are a minority in the cities, where the Western worlds influence is beginning to seep in, and a Moroccan woman has more rights than that of a Middle Eastern woman. Moroccan women can hold high ranking jobs, get divorced, and own property, though many prefer the traditional ways that have ruled their lives for centuries.
